KRSM Radio 2.0

Founded in early 2017, KRSM. The Southside Media Project is a fresh Low-Power FM (LPFM) radio station tailored for, and shaped by, the locales of South Minneapolis. LPFM stations transmit with a mere 100 watts of power, stretching their reach approximately 5 miles in every direction - epitomizing community-driven radio at its essence.

Operating in conjunction with a coalition of residents and non-profit organizations, our station acts as a conduit for disseminating news, music, narratives, discussions, as well as public health and safety advisories throughout this densely-populated and culturally diverse region. Yet, our intentions transcend mere broadcast; we aim to extend an open invitation to the community. Equipped with available recording gadgets for loan, complimentary media training sessions, and three computer labs equipped with audio editing tools, we aim to equip community members with all they necessitate to express their tales, traditions, and collective concerns in their authentic voices. Our programming spans across languages and is an authentic portrayal of the numerous diverse communities that coexist in South Minneapolis.

LPFM stands as a catalyzing instrument that empowers locals to forge their own unfiltered information dissemination networks. It offers a platform where stories can be narrated in an empowering manner that upholds communities without perpetuating stereotypes or marginalizing traditionally silenced voices. Moreover, LPFM enables neighborhoods to confront specific hurdles within their surroundings and react promptly to local crises.

This initiative imparts transferable occupational skills, nurtures self and communal pride, fosters intercultural dialogues, shares health and safety details in multiple languages, and provides a platform for local artists to display their talents to a wide-ranging, diverse audience.
